My Father In Los Angeles Light
I got special access only because I was bidding to repaint it with the company I worked for at the time. I took my father along. Very exciting for him sailing around the lighthouse for years and then being able to be in it. He loved to tour lighthouses and this one I hope was the most special! See ‘About’ page for a picture of me in this lighthouse. See ‘Los Angeles lighthouse’ picture in ‘assorted water related photos’ album for a full picture of this lighthouse.
Remembrance Sail
The Wet Wednesday after my father passed that Saturday. My mother was still in Russia, and so was he. It was tough but he would have wanted us to race I called his skipper Mike Sego (skipper in the picture) and told him I wanted a black band on the boom; he went above and beyond making a mainsail sign “In Memory of Butch Macy.” My brother raced on the same boat as my father and can be seen in the photo standing up trimming spinnaker. Wet Wesnesdays on the one design fleet of Catalina 37’s sponsored by Long Beach Yacht Club and the Long Beach Sailing Foundation. Photo Courtesy of Erica Lowe per my request for pictures to be taken.
In Memory of Butch Macy
Another photo from the remembrance Wet Wednesday for my father. Photo also courtesy of Erica Lowe per my request for pictures to be taken.
Motorycle Tribute
My Father always rode his motorcycle everywhere. Everyone who knew him could tell that he was racing because his motorcycle was parked in the lot. On that Memorial Wet Wednesday I rode his motorcycle for one last Wet Wednesday!
'The Cal' 20
My father loved sailing and teaching. So when he retired from teaching he taught sailing at the U.S. Sailing Center in Long Beach. We had his memorial there near the water. We donated to the sailing center to get a boat named after him. A Cal 20 was fitting. Since his real name was Cal, everyone in racing knew him as “Butch”. The teaching will go on using this boat.
Isthmus Paradise
At isthmus Cove, Two Harbors, Santa Catalina Island. This trip my father and I spent multiple days anchored in Little Fisherman cove from where the picture was taken. I decided to just swim ashore to say I touched land once prior to leaving. Saw this photo opportunity, swam back, got the camera and swam it ashore in a ziplock bag.
Heading to that peaceful place
Heading to the Isthmus. Ship rock (right) and bird rock (left) are in view. My fathers boat unfortunately aptly named “The Final Exam.” Laser sailboat on the deck named “Cheat Sheet.” Dinghy was named “Pop Quiz.” He retired as a teacher at the forefront of Advanced Transportation at Long Beach City College two years before his passing. Luckily he got alot of boating, sailing, scuba diving and racing in. I joined him for alot. The boat is now with a new owner.
Team Coordinated Racing brand picture logo
My dolphin brand picture logo is a photo he took while we were driving to Catalina for in the whaler for a quick day trip over and back for fun.
Dolphins are the epitome of Team Coordinated when they hunt.
Los Angeles breakwall
Another picture on the lighthouse with the breakwall in the background.
Fresnel lens
He loved lighthouses. This is an old fresnel lens from a lighthouse.
Spreading the joy
Here he is doing one of the many events where he shared his love of the water and/or taught people how to sail. This is the Marcedes Lewis event on the Catalina 37’s. Photo copied from online source where provided to all for free.
Sunset on the water
One of the best things in life I enjoy because my father passed it on. Photo taken while doing a boat delivery from Los Angeles to San Francisco as a family. My brother, father and I.
Golden Gate bridge and my father
Nearing the end of the boat delivery.
Cat Harbor profile of my father

Motorcycle trip sunset
My father rode motorcycles since he was 18. I started off road when little with mini bikes and dirt bikes. Rode with my learner permit and also got my motorcycle license with my first drivers license. I rode his Honda CB 750 he bought brand new. I rode his Goldwing 1100. And then bought my own Goldwing 1500 (in front) when I was 21. He took me on a trip across country to the Honda Hoot in Tennessee. This picture was taken on the way back.
Goldwing remembrance
I got some inheritance when my father passed. I upgraded to a newer used Goldwing with ABS. Wanted this color so sicked it up and drove it home from Colorado. Now every time I see or ride I remember him.
My Father Diving
He loved to dive since he was a kid. After he retired he went on many dived trips. He took me on one of his week long live aboard boat dive trips to Turks and Caicos Islands.
Dive prep
On the dive deck.
Halloween dinner
Costume contest night. My father won dressing up like the organizer of the trip.
Between dives
My father acting goofy at the back of the dive deck. Picture taken from swim platform.
Thunderdome
Old tv series similar to Survivor ‘Thunderdome’ was filmed here. Look it up online! Show was cancelled because free divers got the bends diving for ‘pearls’ shooting from the cannons now fallen over on the left side. Taking a breath or more from scuba tanks was earned.
My father in the coral
I turned him around on the dive to get to this photo opportunity.
Coral picture window
Me diving. See the fish with the big eyes? Longspine Squirrelfish.
Wooden sailboat
Everywhere he went he wanted to be around the ocean and boats.
First place
So far the only Santa Barbara to King Harbor race I have been on happened to be upwind and a floating duel for alot of it. Not the usual downwind speed run everyone says it is. But we got first place overall! Passed the TP52 Fox at one point just passed Anacapa Island.
Rubber duck
An artist was displaying this big rubber duck replica in the port.
Coastal ride
Motorcycle ride up to coast requiring a stop for admiring the view, and taking a picture.
On the bow
On the bow of a wooden boat.
Osprey at memorial
We had his memorial at the United States Sailing Center Long Beach. Had his motorcycle and boat there. Was a sunset service, fitting for how he loved sunsets over water so much. An Osprey on the second mast from the left watched over a majority of the service.
Salute to Sailor 1
The next day after the night memorial we had his burial at sea. First thing I thought of was to have a Salute to Sailor. We passed by the Catalina 37’s at the long dock of Long Beach Yacht Club all decorated out with their flags in honor. Then we came around the corner and saw this amazing site. Boats lining up giving a final farewell salute to my father as he, his boat, and the procession went by. Fourteen boats showed up, many the same boats he had raced on. More info in next picture caption.
Salute to Sailor 2
Thank you to all the boats who participated in the Salute to Sailor: Jazz, Hurrah, Code Blue, Lulu, Catalina 37, Miller Time, Flauqitta, Medicine Man, 2 Sea Scouts boats with scouts dressed up and saluting (fitting for his years as an assistant scoutmaster). Thank you to two powerboats who ferried the friends and family. And thanks to those who joined us for the burial at sea.
Dive boat sunset with my father
I am grateful to have this wonderful photo of my father! To remind me of the week long dive trip.
